The Eagle And The Chicken

Most of the girl's life
is lived in fear,
afraid of doing the wrong thing,
afraid someone will find out
what she's done.

But one day,
looking in her closet
for something to wear
the girl tries on anger
instead of fear.

Anger feels good.
it makes things happen.
Today she'll be an eagle,
not a chicken!

she climbs to the rooftop
and walks the summit,
tall as a tightrope queen,
afraid of nothing!

But at the edge,
she looks down.,
at her mother's horrified face,
hears her mother's shriek
pulling her earthward
like a leash around her heart.

For a moment
she hangs on---
balancing-------

arms like wings,
wide open,
FREE!

then dutifully,
she falls.

but the anger
falls with her,
and she knows
it is an outfit
she will wear again.
